Is Street Map UK an alternative to Google Maps or even better?

 Introduction:

Before the invention of Maps, people used to locate places using the compass. Later on, Cartographers started drawing Maps for better accuracy. We all know the usage of Maps. It has helped us find directions since ancient times. The materials in which maps are drawn have changed from time to time. Maps have become so advanced now. We can go to any place in the world with the help of our smartphones. The Global Positioning System(GPS) has made this possible. The two mapping systems that have been extensively used by people now are the Corporate giant-owned Google Maps and the open-source Street Maps UK.

Google Maps Vs. Street Maps UK:

We all know Google Maps is Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company. This Map was developed by Google's developers and is updated regularly to make the location precise. On the other hand, Street Maps UK is an open-source Map regularly updated with volunteers who mark locations worldwide. The areas are more specific and accurate because of public participation. Google acknowledged that this idea was better than theirs, and they also started public participation.  

Street Maps is so detailed because of the comprehensive community worldwide. Two incidences have proven that Street Maps may be better than Google Maps (The island of Haiti earthquake incident and the Nepal earthquake incident). In both incidents, volunteers mapped the entire place with the help of satellite imagery to coordinate with relief work. The astounding rate at which they could do this was only possible because of the open-source code. 

In rural areas also, Street Maps gives a better experience because of its community. Because of its open-source nature, anybody can update its system. So, sometimes people may purposely change the data. But because of its strong community, people update the pertinent information back in no time. 

Conclusion:

Layermap gives better information about the localities because of their non-profitable nature. In contrast, Google is a company that collects data and uses that information to show us advertisements relevant to our location. Because of the brand value and its advertisements, many people have widely used and trusted Google Maps.
